Absence and Sick Leave

The 2010 CIPD Survey reports that the average annual cost of sickness absence per employee is around £600. In the private sector an average of 6.6 days per employee were lost per year, with larger organisation reporting higher levels of absence than smaller companies. In total, an estimate 185 million days are lost to sickness across the UK.

By improving health and safety measures in the work place will help reduce the number of people having to take sick leave which in turn will save the company money on:

  • The salary of absent employees
  • Overtime incurred due to absent employee
  • Loss of output due to absent employee

The HSE has a wealth of information on managing sickness abense and return to work.
