The History book below explains the fascinating story of the British Decorators Association (BDA) and its forerunners from 1894 to 1994. In 2002, the BDA merged with the Painting and Decorating Federation and the Painting & Decorating Association was born. Our long distinguished list of Past National Presidents from all five organisations are listed on the right and we look forward to the next 100 years of representing master craftsmen and women in painting and decorating. The history of the Painter Stainers and their Hall in London takes you on a journey dating back to 1268. The PDA and its ancestral organisations have always enjoyed a close relationship with Painter’s Hall and the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers since the PDA was founded in 1894. The Premier Trophy Awards started with the Painting and Decorating Federation in 1988. Following the merger of the PDF with the BDA, the tradition of recognising the best of the best at an annual awards ceremony continued.Each June in Painter’s Hall, the PDA and its guests celebrate a series of quality projects from around the United Kingdom. Winners have included work in The Grand Opera House in York, the Foreign Office in London, Sellafield nuclear power station, Clifton Suspension Bridge near Bristol, Usher Concert Hall in Edinburgh and the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford.
The judges from the Institute of Clerk of Works are completely independent from the PDA and spend several weeks assessing short-listed entries before deciding upon both winners and worthy runners up who receive certificates.
