About the PDA

As the UK’s largest trade and employers’ association for contractors in the painting and decorating industry, the PDA has members across the length and breadth of the country, and has been committed to encouraging best practice across the industry since 1894.

The member organisations within the PDA vary from sole-traders to large national contractors with works carried out ranging from commercial, industrial, decorative and domestic to specialised hand painted kitchens, sign work, paperhanging and murals. Our comprehensive ‘Find a Decorator’ search facility allows you to browse our membership according to your specifications.

Being a member of the PDA distinguishes professional businesses from the crowd as they adhere to the PDA Code of Practice which demonstrates their commitment to professional, quality workmanship and fair practice throughout their business activities. The support of the PDA also gives both the member and customer peace of mind in the unlikelihood of something going wrong as we offer arbitration reconciliation service so you know help is at hand.

Because the PDA is a non-profit organisation we do not act the same as other corporate companies you find online. The monies generated from member commitment and associate support is reinvested to ensure the industry receives national and international representation. The PDA holds key relationships with membership organisations, government bodies, local authorities, training bodies, colleges, manufacturers, suppliers and the media to maintain standards whilst supporting and promoting new initiatives, innovations, legislation, campaigns and our members within the industry. So whether you are a customer or a member your support is crucial to the maintaining high standards in the sector.

The association holds numerous committees, councils, networking and training events over the year on a national and regional scale. We also celebrate excellence from across the industry at the Premier Trophy Award and Apprentice/Trainee Award, and the Paperhanger of the Year competition. Visit our ‘Event’ and ‘Awards’ page for further information.

The impact of the economic crisis has proved to be testing for all those in the construction industry and recent studies have predicted skill shortages in various sectors including the painting and decorating industry. The PDA has therefore placed training high on their agenda and have undertaken the largest research project since 1997 to provide a comprehensive training programme for the industry and we be holding key training courses for the foreseeable future. A free Business Management Appreciation course is available for members as to support success in business.

If you would like any further information on any of the discussed above or having any questions or feedback for the PDA then please do not hesitate to get in touch with our staff at Head Office.
